I think David and I have had a bit of Dark Academia going on in our house. Our family room hangout is a dark, dark forest green. It a big, bright room and can take the dark walls. It turns it into a very cozy space at night. Our bedroom is a deep teal with deep maroon accents. We only went in that direction because we bought a very cheap carpet so very many years ago, and the wall color was the only thing we could think of to make the carpet color bearable. We have lots of old, smelly books, lots of odd bottles and jars hanging out in wooden boxes, lots of candles and vintage American Indian knick knacks, and lots of nature - collected rocks, shells and of course my sand collection. This is an old photo of my bedroom, the one time it was clean.
Spotlight on a dark and moody aesthetic trend that’s seeping into the interior design world! It’s called “Dark Academia.” It might sound spooky, but it’s actually more about academics, literature, and the arts! (Hence, “academia.”) The “dark” part of the time is more in reference to the darker color palettes used in this aesthetic. (So, don’t worry—no “defense against the dark arts” training required to pull off this look!)
The Dark Academia aesthetic is what you might expect to find if you stumbled into the office of a professor at Cambridge or Oxford in the 1950s. Or a Gothic-era parlour, being entertained by the moody and mysterious Mr. Rochester himself. Or, ok, even the Gryffindor common room! All that to say, it’s a look that steeped in history and nostalgia, with a good dash of romanticism
The spruce writes: As Michael Rolland, interiors expert and MD at The Paint Shed, explains, “The Dark Academia aesthetic draws inspiration from European gothic architecture, such as Oxford and Cambridge University, late 19th-century literature influences such as Sherlock Holmes, and a dark, moody color palette—think Hogwarts at home.” “It’s a Harry Potter meets Indiana Jones aesthetic,” says Peti Lau, trend expert for used furniture marketplace Kaiyo. “I would describe it as very collegiate and gothic-inspired.”
From Wayfare: What is dark academia, you may be wondering? It is a recently popularized social media subculture that mostly revolves around the celebration of classic literature, the pleasures of learning, and a passion for knowledge. Dark academia is by no means a new decor style, but rather an amalgamation of various already existing aesthetics that celebrate things such as old universities, sprawling libraries, dimly lit offices with rich textures, and dark colors. Though there has been criticism of the exclusivity that the dark academia aesthetic and lifestyle may have historically represented, the interior design that now makes up this style is for everyone – anyone can employ their personal spin and creativity to this style, giving it the meaning and symbolism that they choose.
Dark Academic Decor Basics
The dark academia aesthetic is one that is widely open to interpretation and self-expression. As long as you combine mystery with decadence – and perhaps some images reminiscent of your alma mater, you are headed in the right direction. Dark academia interior design embraces dark colors, rich textures, and vintage-inspired decor.
Dimly lit rooms with flickering candles, alcoves full of intrigue, and an eclectic collection of knick-knacks are not at all out of place.
Haphazardly stacked books, sophisticated artwork, and images associated with literature and learning work well to embrace the moody designs.
