Hitting The Target
I LOVE this image I found on the NYT piece, The House Next Door, "Mr. Coupland, who was an artist before his writing career took off, has created an open floor plan that showcases his art and reflects his inventive point of view. "The house, to me, is all about modularity and building kits," he said, referring to the vintage building kits that he collects. Here, he applies white Lego building blocks to a post in an upstairs gallery space, where his "Target Stack" installation hangs on a wall.". Please, Mr. Coupland, could I live next door to you?

Looking Into The Past
Mom and I had fun searching places we have lived in the past via Google Maps the other night. (near Mosta Dome) Malta, (Aberdeen, Rait, Dundee) Scotland, (Pori) Finland, looking for our Aunt Erin's house in Alvarado, Texas. It always takes my breathe away to see the detail from satellite photos. We found most of the houses or areas. I think they tore down my aunts house in Alvarado. ;(
Claverhouse (Dundee, Scotland) is a house we lived in the late 70's. A beautiful place with conservatory to the side, an old, low-ceiling kitchen, wonderful marble bathroom with what had to be one of the original shower heads ever manufactured. The front lawn completely covered in daffodils every spring. The largest Rhodies up the front drive that I have ever seen. It was magical. And it was magical to take that journey with mom.

Lighting Up
Perseids Meteor Shower tonight. It is cloudy right now, but I told the kids to look UP when M drove Bri home. Maybe they can see some even if I can't right now. If I get out of bed when the alarm goes off, maybe I can catch one or two. It has been a long day full of coding, something I am not comfortable with. A Hack. That is what I am. But I was a hack back in the 80's when bored at work for Rio Airways and hacked into the Braniff system to talk to other ticket agents all over the United States. I spent hours figuring out how to do it. I wish someone had given me the hint to go into computer science back then ... or understood what I was doing could be profitable in the future ... maybe I wouldn't be so confused about what I should be now. Hired illustrator/designer asked to code pages. Sometimes exciting, sometimes exhausting. Looking into full-time classes at local community college.
But enough of that. Erin lit up my day today before the sun came up with this post about celebrating life. There are many moments when I walk outside to get away from the computer and hear a bird song, stopped dead in my tracks and smile because it is a song I haven't heard before. Or find a little seed that is fascinating in its' shape and color. I was trimming the tree a couple of day ago and a sudden gust of cool wind blew over my face. I stopped and just watched the leaves sway and thought, how wonderful that is. To hear the wind, feel the wind. A song, really.
Watch my puppy (the baby) discover wind (she tucks her tail like something is after her "back there") as she keeps looking at her back to see what is trying to catch her, or when she found out about rain for the first time and kept looking up to see what was hitting her head (her ears not perked, but fallen down sideways). To watch her chase little flying insects, a new playmate? Or watch me dig in the dirt and decide that looks like fun and tries to help. Watches every movement of our lips, head twisted sideways, trying to understand what we are saying to her. Watching her discover the world, is a celebration.
My son comes home very late from painting at the free wall in Seattle. And has to tell me every detail of his night, his experience, his joy, his excitement and his photos. THAT is a celebration. (Although, at the moment, I am thinking, I have to be up in 2 hours.) Watching him, listening to him ... he is truly my life's celebration.
So, all is not loss when you think of the little things to celebrate. Although, I have been suffering for months of agonizing depression, there are so many thrilling moments to keep the magic alive within me.
And don't forget my amazing friend, Faith's new post about "blue". God, I wish I could write like that! :) Ok, I must go to bed. I have 5.5 hours of sleep now.

Early Running Late
There is a much needed gentle rain coming down. It is very early and I am still running late. I am drinking my cup of coffee and deleting spam emails. I wish I could sit here all day, play on my computer and blog. But I must go to work. Have a good day today.

Showered With Sketches
I went with Tara to Teesha's for Dawn's wedding shower. Instead of shower games we had sketching games -- drawing without looking, with our non-dominant hand and exquisite corpse, where you divide paper into thirds, someone draws the top, another the middle and a bottom. I have to say the results were wonderful. Below, sketching a face without taking pen from paper or looking.

A Moment In The Sun
My cousin (something removed) sent me a link to photos that another cousin (second?) had uploaded to Facebook. So mom and I been reminiscing about the past. Family long gone but still so close I can see every detail of them. My grandmother and her sisters were fishing fanatics and some of my favorite memories are all of us fishing. Big Mama teaching us to bait a hook, or digging up grubs and worms from her yard (for the hook). Fishing at night with at the end of some dock. Boats and Lake Whitney.
"I can see them fishing in my minds eye right now ... the shirt Big Mama would be wearing, the color and texture of her skin, the most beautiful shade of brown and wrinkled from years of sun exposure. Her hands, her flat fingernails (my dad has her nails), painted but polish chipped, wedding bands and her tanned fingers. Red Avon lipstick on thin lips and short, wavy brown hair tinged with gray blown in the wind. I can hear her laughing and an enormous smile that engulfed us all ... all grandkids enchanted with her. Adoring her, while she us, but more."
This photo is my grandmother and grandfather taken in Rotan, Texas before they were married. The story is she bought these shoes for the photo and returned them the following day. Two of the most loving, giving, generous people in the world. And definitely the BEST grandparents kids could wish for.

My mom and dad, to the right.

And all of these are my great-grandmother, Della (we called her "muzzer"). She lived in a M-I-L apartment at my grandparents most of my childhood. And she always wore a belted, small print dress, usually navy, as in the last photo. Isn't it funny how all those memories came flooding back the minute you see an image.

Do Nothing Day
I was out of it most of the day. Sliding in and out of consciousness while watching recorded cooking shows and movies. I usually blog and research on the Saturday mornings, for blogging post for the week. I finally drug myself from my horizontal position when D told me the slugs were eating their way through my new hydrangea and Daphne. So, out to cut up a 50+ very large brown slugs. You know, I hate to kill them. But they can really do damage and I haven't been paying attention to them this summer. Back to the sofa.
