Audubon magazine has a beautiful piece on birds' nest this month. Birds’ nests are ephemeral, often abandoned once the young have fledged. But the sheer ingenuity of these miniature marvels of architecture is as durable as the impressions left by a San Francisco photographer, Sharon Beals, who captures them in their lasting glory.

About a week ago I dared to open one of my birdhouse doors to take a picture. Everyone remarked that I was lucky I didn't get a bald spot pecked into my head! And I'm sure they were right. But I loved seeing the fragile, puzzle-like configuration of the nest.
