Cold and foggy

Cold and foggy and after experiencing heat at Lake Shasta and California, I am not complaining. I know it will warm up later today when the fog burns off. But at this moment, it feels delicious. (Photo for Maggy).

My vacation is almost over. It feels great not to be invested in the news for two weeks. I am feeling rested. Back to awaking early ... my body must know this, I woke up at 5am this morning. One more week would be perfect!

Fast & furious road trip

Before arriving anywhere, we were thoroughly entertained by ground squirrels at a rest stop that literally met us at the car door begging for food. Very cute. Lake Shasta - the thing to do there is rent a houseboat for the week. San Francisco - San Francisco MOMA,  graffiti on Haight, Chinatown, North Beach (we just walked around from our hotel), Laguna, Union Street, The Presidio, Palace of Fine Arts. Then there was camping at Lake Sonoma in wine country. After the sun came up, the hills were filled with bees buzzing around. Hwy. 101 through the giant Redwoods, a beach near Orick where I found the best, thinnest rocks I have ever seen. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

My wonderful roses

Just found these on my camera, before the camera had problems ;) These roses are so heavy, the stems can't hold them up so I made a big bouquet before I left home.

Home Sweet Home

We made it home. So while I gather my thoughts and what few photos I have from my damaged camera .... here are a few details:

No one was injured, no big fights ensued, but it was touch and go at times

Saw two falling stars

Collected dirt and sand from each place we stopped

Picked up a dead dragonfly and crepe myrtle seed pods

Found the greatest rocks (and a heart rock) on a beach north of Eureka

Have a new appreciation for my own clean, flushing toilet

Foggy, windy, cold, winding drive up Hwy. 101

Listened to Earth, Wind and Fire the last two hours of the trip

The kids needed motion sickness medicine

Came home with clothes so foul they might have to be thrown away

Saw lots of wonderful wild flowers, collected a few in my notebook

I miss everything about SF!

Walked Haight Street in search of graffiti

M tagged a derelict house in Hwy 101

Harassed by more crazies in SF than I remember being there before

Visited my old neighborhood on Laguna Street and did a little shopping on Union.

Ate so much junk food at fast food places, I can't wait for a decent meal

While hiding out in the shade at Lake Shasta, observed a woodpecker's nest carved into a Madrona tree

Crescent City, CA. Trying to figure out the best path home. I left the battery in the charger for the Pentax. And the Canon is acting very badly. ;(

Extra car

I have packed another handbag to accommodate cameras, books and such. Told D I have an extra purse and he said, we are going to need an extra car.

The Clampetts are leaving Edmonds

I said, it looks like the Clampetts are going on vacation. David said, if we were they Clampetts we would have your mother strapped to the top of the car. Point taken. See you soon. xoxo

Visting old friends

Bees using lavender as springboards over to another. Tiny unknown flying objects sparkle in the sun while the dogs follow me around the yard, digging where I dig. Me, trying to tame the grapes from taking over hydrangeas. And prune one of the Snowball Viburnums (badly planted spot) into submission of being a smaller version. A robin so robust, I thought it was a crow ... just waiting for some juicy worm to show itself in dewy grass.

I am on vacation. Trying not to let my brain explode with my endless "to-do" list. Instead, enjoying feeling freedom to explore the yard, the studio, catch up on correspondence needing a stamp. Chores, like installing a new area rug in the living room, some dusting, cleaning. But not too much the first day. Also thinking of a road trip to San Francisco via Shasta Lake (for a day of fishing). Right now, it is all spinning around in my head. Tomorrow, we might be packing the car.

Midsomer Murders

So mom and I watched our last Midsomer Murders (52 so far) from Netflix the other night. In mourning that it would be the last time we sat down with Inspector Barnaby as he investigated yet another grizzly crime in the idyllic village of Causton, England. Taking in the wonderful theme music that makes my heart jump a beat when I hear it. Well, I just discovered there are 15 more episodes. They are not available on Netflix (yet) and I am trying to find where we can view them somewhere. We are so thrilled that we have something to look forward to watching! The little things that make us happy. ;)

In A Vase (revisited)

Well, it wasn't a waste of an entire day but I didn't think it would take me so long to edit my book. I haven't uploaded the new version yet, just want one more pair of eyes to look over the text. I replaced photos, added a page to identify flowers - I have learned a lesson. Makes notes of what you are shooting and write it down some place! Okay, uploaded my new version.

Do I have space for one? Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Strawberry looks so delicious. A couple of my hydrangeas are completely full of blooms, almost too many, they get too heavy and the some blooms get a scorched edge. The others are still trying to come back from the pruning a couple of years ago. Pixel getting around the yard pretty fast ;)

One flower's secrets revealed

I have a huge bouquet of flowers that D bought me at the market. I love to see the collection of amazing colors and shapes. But I really love photographing and visiting just one at a time. To see the patterns, the colors, the construction of that one flower ... each one is simply a work of wonderful art.





Okay, now off to get some real work done, like, clean out the refrigerator. Finish my book. Register my new brand name and logo. Clean the family room. So on, and so on.
