Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
I always wondered if women were truly in charge if we would have the wars we endure now (and for centuries). I have always thought that women in charge would not send their sons to war lightly, the be killed or to kill other sons of other women. That has always been my rose-colored-glass view. That if women ran countries that it would be a very different political landscape. Well, I just watched the most extraordinary segment of Independent Lens about Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Iron Lady, first female President of Liberia. If you have a chance, you should really watch it. It is encouraging and frustrating to see what challenges she has facing her and the other women in her cabinet (she has appointed many).
And on the same continent ... I really hope they vote Mugabe, president of the completely failed country of Zimbabwe, out of office, but I don't think they will. What a corrupt bastard he is! That country is in shambles ... and it all lies at his well-polished-expensive-Italian-shod feet. Come on, Zimbabweans, see the future and get rid of that dead weight!

Red Charm Peony
Features Photo Editor from Rocky Mountain News contacted me the other day and wanted to use one of my Red Charm peony photos for their Dig issue. I didn't make any money on it but I was proud to let them use it for credit. I have to tell myself, it can't all be about money, or can it?

Tagged For Ten
Brenda tagged me for 10 things about myself. Honest things. Well, I don't know if there is anything left to tell about myself ;) and/or that I am so boring lately, I have nothing interesting to tell. So, here I go.
I have a foul mouth. I do not use it around my son ... and try to watch myself at work. And always feel guilty when I let it rip.
I feel older than dirt the last six months.
Lately, I really feel like a square peg being hammered into a round hole.
It is hard for me to be social lately or even strike up conversations with others ... I want to be very quiet and alone for now.
My brain feels like a pinball machine ... words, thoughts, like the small balls are hitting one side of my brain and flying over to the other side, lighting up and making pinging noises.
I am addicted to NPR and listen to it most of the day streaming live.
I trust my son will do the right thing most of the time. He is full of good common sense and honesty.
My purse looks like the inside of a garbage can and tell myself everynight driving home from work that I will clean it out!
My truck looks like the inside of a garbage can and tell myself everynight driving home from work that I will clean it out!
I normally get dressed from slightly-worn-dirty clothes which lay on a chair in the bedroom. I call this "dressing off the floor".

Sick ... (And Tired)
I loved Bill Cosby's quote from one of his sketches ... "sick" ....... "and tired" from many years ago.
Have had the flu. Then lots of catching up at work from being sick.
Missed my dental appointment, my CSS class (rescheduled), but tonight made it to Women in the Mix: Mixed Media exhibit at ArtsNow gallery where Tara and friends had lots of wonderful work.

Busy Today
Brunch with Bo, Joel and Mom in Ballard. Picked up D's car left at the airport for a day (and I won't tell you what that cost!). I should have just driven them out at 4 a.m. Stopped by the antique store and found some great finds! Talked to Michelle about when she will be here for ArtFest! Will see her in a couple of weeks! Talked Tara about an art show in Edmonds next weekend she is participating in. Woo Hoo.

50-Something
Rita gave me the perfect birthday present, something I really love but don't have to find a place in my house to store. I love you, Rita, thank you!
Even my son forgot how old I am. I told him two years ago it was his duty to keep up with my age now. That I had given up and given that chore to him. :)
We were talking about being 50 and I said, we'll see what you think about being 50, wish I would be here to see what YOU think. And he said "You will be here when I am 50." And said, probably not, that would make me almost 90, I don't know if I will be here then. Then we laughed about how my old truck filled with junk would look like by then, with just a shape of a body amid all the junk where I would fit in to drive. I forget sometimes how hard it is the think of your parents not being with you your entire life. And how scary it must be for him sometimes ... but I hope he understands I will not be around to see him turn 40 or 50. I explained to him some time ago when we were talking about death that I have had such a great life and he was the ulitmate gift, that I was not afraid of death. That at his age, of course, death is feared. But at my age, it is not feared, especially when one has had such a wonderful life and blessed with such a great son. Then we moved on to YouTube to watch some rapping freestyle battles.
Of course, I completely understand, I can't imagine my life without my mom.

The Remains
It amazes me how something so delicate can survive the winter without being destroyed. I spent a couple of hours in the yard, cleaning up. And when I do that, I think gosh, I need to spend an entire week out here cleaning up. And when I go to the studio to clean up, I think, gosh, I need to spend an whole month just cleaning this mess up. Same in garage, in my closet, in my car, in the front yard! (do you hear me running away screaming in disgust and frustration).

Small Miracles
Audubon magazine has a beautiful piece on birds' nest this month. Birds’ nests are ephemeral, often abandoned once the young have fledged. But the sheer ingenuity of these miniature marvels of architecture is as durable as the impressions left by a San Francisco photographer, Sharon Beals, who captures them in their lasting glory.

Snippets Of Brenda
I love discovering new places as I did tonight, The Brenda Blog, Snippets of Me.
And the found her blog banner designer, Susan Tuttle.
Okay, I know my blog banner is rather boring. I have never changed it from the CSS. And I have designed hundreds of them for Something To Say, because that is what I do for a living. But I hate large downloads, I hate to wait for a bantop to load up (not to mention, all of the images we now have on our blogs) ... in the old days, I would click away from a site if it took more than a couple of seconds. We study and learn these things working for a website .. although, I think, many popular sites do not even consider this now because so many viewers have more bandwidth. Regardless of all of these factors, I am happy with a simple banner ... it says everything it needs to say. This is not to say that I don't enjoy all of those wonderful artful banners out there.

Self-Portrait Challenge 03.04
My brain cries out to stop the images that we see on a daily basis. Working for the news, I have seen some terrible things that no human should ever endure, that other humans should never experience and the rest of us should never see. I cry alot in my job from images that burned into my brain and will never leave. Stories that I will never forget. Stories that find me crying and screaming in my car, so when I get home, I can put it all behind me for the moment and feel like a normal human being. The mental image of that girl in Florida that was buried alive in a black garbage plastic bag with her favorite bear, after being raped and tortured by some lunatic made me SCREAM to myself in my car on the home. Children killed, starved, raped, made orphans, maimed and tortured worldwide. Soldiers killed, beheaded before cameras, losing arm, legs, lives. Children losing parents. Starving children in Darfur. The images go on and on and on ... and my brain screams out STOP! NO MORE. There has got to be a way for us to inhabit this world in peace, where all humankind can care for their children, protect their children, feed their children. And we can all respect each other views, lives, religions. Self Portrait Challenge ask us to look at our political opinions. My opinion is ... let's take care of each other. Live in peace. Respect each other and care for our children's future here on this fragile earth. (Other images borrowed from different sites).
