Someone's Final Post

I was glad that I got to listen to a little of The Sandbox: Dispatches from Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on KUOW this morning. I found this, Final Post from MAJ Andrew Olmsted (via hilzoy), longtime blogger killed on January 3rd in Iraq. And although, I am not in favor of this war but I do have great admiration for our soldiers over there.

I wasn't surprised to listen to the bloggers talk about how therapeutic it was to capture their experiences in the moment. I didn't realize how many military blogs were out there. I love the romantic notion of finding an old box full of letters wrapped in a ribbon for us to read decades later about someones war experience, when maybe it isn't so painful to reminisce. But have to admit, reading it real time makes it so intense and scary, so personal, sometimes, heartbreaking.

And this one, an American military surgeon deployed to Iraq. Well, I can't choose just one or two to list here, from my clicking around they are all worth checking into.

Mossy Experiment

While waiting at the accupuncturist today, I spied with my little eye, perfect clumps of moss that the high wind had blown off it's perch. Keeping "tiny" in mind, I planted some in tiny terracotta pots and two small ceramic ones. Just for fun, to see what happens. The textures! The colors and the little hairs that spike up are very delightful to look at.

{later} Since Evil Mad Scientist was so kind to link to my moss experiment, I thought I should actually investigate what kind of moss I was experimenting with. I am pretty sure it is Tetraphis pellucida and baby moss clumps are doing very well as long I keep it very moist. Basic moss biology,







I had so much planned to do today but have taken the slower road. I am walking around the house with needles sticking from the top of my head ...(maybe I indentify with the little moss above). Decided to leave the needles in for as long as possible and take it easy. Slathered on anagestic cream on my aching arm, applied one of those smelly patches ... and played with moss. No rushing, no guilt .... ;)

Tiny Buildings

How can little paper houses look so elegant? Tiny Buildings via whipup. I thought I would find a little house template or some instructions somewhere out on the internet to make a small house model. Albeit, it was late and I was just messing around because I felt the challenge ... ended up winging this using my old business cards. Built a flower house, with dimensional flowers, round windows and a rain-water collector gutter. I would love to try another one again.
