Illustration Friday - Rain (Barrels) And Texas Thunderstorms

I am not a native of Washington state but I have lived here long enough to know that when it quits raining in March that is cause for concern. I didn't need this study to tell me that our weather is changing. The last 3 or 4 years have - and sunny March, April, May, have confirmed that for me.

So I am thinking rain Illustration Friday and hoping that it comes back to us in Washington!

IF - Rain

My son and I experienced a blustering Texas thunderstorm several years ago. Watching the approach, sky darkening, lightning, thunder, change in the ozone, wonderful "dust settling" smell, change in the temperature. We were at my sister's house in the middle of "nowhere's-ville Texas" - the perfect place for perfect storm viewing. He was fascinated since he had never seen anything like it before. When we returned home I told him I thought we should recreate that storm so we would have a little piece of Texas in our dining room. With a large piece of masonite, framing and house paint, we set off to do just that.

There has been trouble with rain water in Europe, too. People seem to take quite lightly the warnings and still in the still of the night water their front lawns...??? well hallo. Do we really need armed guards? Great drawing of that. In the other illo I can feel that smell... whooo whe humans are sooo tiny.

What a great painting. I think I can smell the change in the air right before a big storm. I love that you and your son created it together.

The thunderstorms are the thing I miss most about Texas. It make me homesick to think of them. Every sumer afternoon, a good lightning storm and a bunch of rain, only to have it blow away and be lovely by evening to dinner out of doors.

You caught the Texas expanse and weight of an approaching storm. Don't forget how many of them can turn into tornados faster than you can spin in a circle.

You really did capture a total experience in the painting. I can almost feel as if I'm there! The weather has most defintely been very different the past few years. We have had so much rain this spring and it just keeps coming for days and days! I wish we could send some to the other parts of the country that are so dry.
