Illustration Friday - Surprise

Illustration Friday is surprise. I can remember twirling the little handle on a jack-in-the-box toy as a child. Knowing the jester would pop out but still always being surprised when it did. This is an old illustration from my newspaper days. Santa-In-The-Box is my offering for surprise.

This is really cool! I like the idea of Santa as Jack-in-the-box, and his spiffy costume! Great layers, sense of motion and colors.

Reminds me of the Jack in the box we made in college...remember? Remember how everyone bailed out of helping make it, and then you were the only one to man the box?

We had fun with that big community project for kids. I wonder if they ever use it anymore?
I love this illo. I love jack in boxes, one of my favorite things!

This is a fabulous design - excellent colors and composition. It's true - ebven though you know it's coming, you're still startled. Really nice - I especially like the accordion message.

Thank you Carla and Megan. I do like the design aspect of illustration as much (or more) as the illustraton itself. You guys all made my day!

Agreed, Kim. I love inserting elements of design in my pieces. I've never been one to do a straight-up illustration that often - I almost always drag it through FreeHand or PS afterwards. Great, colourful piece, btw.

Great idea Kim. I really like all the little design elements that lead your eye through the image. And you Santa is so cute - he looks a lot like Santa from that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer animated special. Always loved that. Happy Holidays to you too!
